In today’s dynamic job market, understanding the motivations behind Gen Z’s decision to leave their jobs is crucial for employers seeking to attract and retain talent. A recent report -Deloitte Global 2024 Gen Z and Millennial Survey shed light on the primary factors driving this trend, highlighting key areas where companies can focus their efforts to improve employee satisfaction and longevity.

  1. Compensation Concerns: A significant proportion of Gen Z employees quit due to insufficient pay. Approximately 26% of Gen Z respondents cited this as a primary reason for quitting, echoing similar sentiments expressed by 29% of millennials.

  2. Limited Career Advancement: Another prominent issue is the perceived lack of career progression opportunities within organizations. For 16% of Gen Z workers, the absence of clear paths for advancement was a deciding factor in their departure, a sentiment shared by 22% of millennials.

  3. Burnout and Mental Health: The toll of workplace stress and burnout is driving a notable portion of Gen Z employees away from their jobs. Fourteen per cent of Gen Z respondents reported leaving due to feeling burnt out, with a comparable 17% among millennials. Additionally, concerns about the detrimental impact of the job on mental well-being led 14% of Gen Z workers to seek greener pastures, paralleled by 18% of millennials.

  4. Lack of Fulfillment: Finding purpose in their work is crucial for Gen Z, and 13% of respondents expressed dissatisfaction due to unfulfilling or meaningless roles, a sentiment mirrored by 15% of millennials.

  5. Work/Life Balance: Achieving a harmonious balance between work and personal life is a priority for many Gen Z employees. Thirteen per cent indicated that their roles did not offer a positive work/life balance, echoing the concerns of 14% of millennials.

  6. Skills Development: Continuous learning and skills enhancement are valued by Gen Z, making the absence of such opportunities a factor in their decision to leave.
