Recent discussions on dialogue and criticism by Gen Z regarding high taxation levels have unintentionally brought back unresolved issues associated with the late Jacob Juma. Juma, whose bold tweets are now seen as potentially sparking a revolution in the country, first emerged as a prominent figure in politics during President Moi's era in 1992. He developed close ties with Deputy President Ruto through his participation in the YK92 youth movement led by Cyrus Jirongo, which supported Moi.
Initially, Juma's association with Jirongo enabled him to prosper financially in the political sphere, leading to his acquisition of significant wealth. He built a lavish mansion in Karen, named after his hometown, and owned luxury vehicles.
However, during President Uhuru Kenyatta's administration, Juma began facing legal challenges and alleged persecution aimed at stifling his business interests. Despite threats and intimidation, Juma adamantly exposed corruption scandals involving public lands and taxpayer funds, implicating high-profile politicians including Ruto, Najib Balala, and Evans Kidero.
Juma's whistleblowing activities drew severe backlash from those implicated, leading to threats to his life. Remarkably, Juma preemptively disclosed details about individuals plotting his assassination.
Tragically, on May 6, 2016, Jacob Juma was discovered dead in his car on Ngong Road, Nairobi, having been brutally murdered while driving home from a bar by unknown gunmen. According to BBC, the gunmen escaped on motorbikes after firing 10 shots at the vehicle but did not steal anything from him.
His death sent shockwaves through Kenya, particularly among opposition circles and anti-corruption activists, mourning the loss of a fearless campaigner against governmental corruption.
Jacob Juma's life and untimely demise also came after he had warned several months ago that there was a plot to kill him because of his outspoken views.
