Activists are gearing up for protests in Nairobi’s Central Business District on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, to oppose the proposed Finance Bill, 2024. Dubbed #Occupy Parliament, the protest is scheduled to coincide with the tabling of the Bill in Parliament.

Boniface Mwangi, one of the organizers, announced that Kenyans from across the country will gather at various points in the city before marching to Parliament. The assembly points include Ambassadeur/Archives, Nation Centre, Supreme Court, Skate Park, Taifa Road, Kencom Stage, and City Hall Way.

Mwangi encouraged participants to arrive early and observe the activities around town. The protests are set to commence at 11 am, with the main route being Harambee Avenue.

Participants are advised to wear black attire, carry whistles or vuvuzelas, bring placards with messages for their MPs, and have drinking water on hand.

Mwangi assured that the police have promised to respect their right to protest and will be present to maintain peace and provide escort.

Preparations for handling the protest are underway, with multi-agency teams meeting on Monday. Concerns about potential disruptions to Parliament proceedings when the Finance Bill is voted on Thursday, June 20. Anti-riot teams will be deployed in anticipation.

Mwangi emphasized the importance of maintaining calm if harassed, reminding protestors to act as ambassadors of peace. He stressed a zero-tolerance policy towards alcohol, violence, weapons, or destruction of property during the peaceful march.

Participants were cautioned against using threatening language or engaging with provocateurs who may attempt to disrupt the event. Mwangi urged vigilance and advised reporting suspicious behaviour to the police promptly.
