President William Ruto on Friday, July 19, 2024, nominated Rebecca Miano, the former Trade Cabinet Secretary, for Kenya's Attorney General position, potentially making her the country's first female to hold the office. If confirmed, she will succeed Justin Muturi, who served as the seventh Attorney General since Kenya's independence.

Miano's career spans significant roles in both government and the private sector. Previously, she held the position of Trade Cabinet Secretary. Before that, she was the Cabinet Secretary for the East African Community, where she played a pivotal role in policy formulation and regional development initiatives.

Before her tenure in government, Miano made history as the first female Managing Director and CEO of Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen), a role she held for five years. With over three decades of experience in the energy sector, she has been a prominent figure in promoting sustainable energy solutions and advocating for gender equality. Miano is also known for founding the Pink Energy Forum, which aims to address gender issues in the energy sector.

Her academic credentials include a Bachelor of Law (LLB) Degree, a Diploma in Law, and post-graduate studies in Comparative Law. She is a member of the Law Society of Kenya and has served on various esteemed bodies, including the Finance Committee of the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) and the World Bank Group's Advisory Council on Gender and Development.

Throughout her career, Miano has received several accolades, underscoring her contributions to governance and public service. These include being named Chairperson of the Year by Women on Boards in 2021 and receiving awards for her governance role in the Champions of Governance Awards series. She has also been honoured with the Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya (OGW) and Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear for her distinguished service.

If appointed as Attorney General, Miano will assume critical responsibilities, including the formulation of legal policies and ensuring the effective administration of Kenya's legal system. Her nomination reflects her extensive experience, leadership qualities, and dedication to public service, marking a significant milestone in Kenya's legal and governmental history.

List of Reappointed CSs

Six former Cabinet Secretaries have been reappointed in President Ruto's administration: Kithure Kindiki for Interior, Alice Wahome for Public Works, Aden Duale for Defence, Davis Chirchir for Roads, and Soipan Tuya for Environment. Kindiki, Duale, and Tuya retain their previous roles, while Wahome transitions from Lands and Chirchir from Energy. Rebecca Miano, former CS for Industry and Trade, has been nominated for the position of Attorney General.
