A new era unfolded in Kenya's history on Tuesday and Thursday, marking a unique revolution untouched by ethnic divisions, political affiliations, social statuses, or influence. This uprising was ignited by government oppression towards ordinary citizens, funded by our taxes yet met with arrogance and self-serving policies benefiting the elite. For the first time, a new generation courageously exercised their democratic rights in Nairobi's streets, rallying under the banners of #RejectFinanceBill2024 and #OccupyParliament.

Led predominantly by Gen-Z and some millennials, this movement embodied patriotism and a call for substantial change. The protest in Nairobi's CBD was remarkably peaceful until law enforcement, seemingly rattled by the contentious Finance Bill, mistakenly targeted innocent protestors. It was a stark reminder that those harassed and detained were the very youth advocating for the welfare of all Kenyans.

Before the march, mounting pressure compelled the government to retract several proposed taxes, including a 25% excise duty on palm and cooking oils, and exemptions for locally manufactured goods like diapers and sanitary towels from eco levies. This agitation began on social media and escalated into a groundswell, disproving sceptics like David Ndii who dismissed it as mere online chatter.

Gen-Z, once criticized for making noise without action, emerged as a force for tangible change. Despite the efforts, MPs voted to pass the Finance Bill inviting more action next week. The message from Gen-Z's actions demands transparency and conducive conditions for national prosperity. Excessive taxation threatens to cripple our nation, and Gen-Z's unified stance calls for sustainable solutions.

As a member of Gen-Z, I urge my peers to embrace civic engagement, leadership, and advocacy as tools for furthering this crucial revolution. Together, we can steer Kenya towards the future we envision. Viva, comrades!

ENTERTAINMENT RUNDOWN:

Kenyan Anti-Tax Protests Escalate: Netizens Mobilize Amid Tragic Incident

Anti-tax protest organizers have scheduled a series of events starting this Friday, leading to the second round of #OccupyParliament demonstrations next Tuesday. Boniface Mwangi, a leading activist, expressed frustration over the Finance Bill's progression despite widespread public opposition, following a parliamentary vote on Thursday. He condemned the use of force by police during peaceful protests, citing two deaths and numerous injuries, including one critically wounded individual. The movement was deeply affected by the death of Rex Kanyike Masai, 24, allegedly shot during Thursday's protests in Nairobi. Investigations by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) are underway, with condolences extended to Masai's family. The upcoming schedule includes mosque visits, a national moment of silence at clubs, church actions against supportive MPs, constituency office visits, a national strike, and continued demonstrations seeking justice for Kanyike.
