19 reasons why Gen Zs wanna Leave Kenya
4 out of 5 Gen Zs aspire to explore opportunities abroad.
A recent survey highlighted a striking phenomenon: the growing inclination of Kenya’s young population, particularly distressed Gen Zers -folks aged 18 to 27-, to ditch Kenya and seek opportunities abroad. This trend revealed by Africa Uncensored, raises questions and prompts us to ponder: What is feeding the growing appetites of Kenya's youth to distant shores?
The report dubbed'; "Fame, Fortune and Freedom; Decoding the Shape of the Dream for Kenya’s Gen Z," collected data from 1,300 Kenyans where a staggering 84% of the respondents expressed a willingness to leave Kenya for greener pastures elsewhere. Only a meagre 16% expressed a preference for remaining in the country. The allure of the West seems particularly strong, with nearly 80% eyeing America as their preferred destination, followed by Europe at slightly over 60%, and Australia at 37%.
While the promises of better prospects, improved living standards, and access to advanced education and technology undoubtedly shape their aspirations, there's a more detailed tale of disillusionment and frustration with Kenya’s status quo beneath the surface.
At the heart of this desire to leave lies a palpable sense of discontent with the opportunities—or lack thereof—available within Kenya's borders. Despite a vibrant entrepreneurial spirit and abundant natural resources, the country grapples with persistent challenges, including soaring unemployment rates, poor governance, systemic corruption and sluggish economic growth. For many Gen Zs, these obstacles are big roadblocks to realizing their ambitions and fulfilling their potential.
Moreover, in this generation, the traditional pathways to success, such as pursuing a career in farming or entering the formal job market, no longer hold the same appeal they once did. Instead, the rise of the digital age has ushered in a new era of possibilities, where entrepreneurship and online ventures offer unprecedented avenues for self-expression and financial independence. In the eyes of Kenya's youth, the World Wide Web represents not just a virtual space but a gateway to a brighter future beyond the confines of their homeland.
The findings also revealed that perhaps something is happening with Gen Z's moral dimensions. While some prioritize ethical wealth acquisition, others are willing to compromise their principles for financial gain. This divergence in values reflects the complex interplay between ambition, pragmatism, and societal norms in shaping the aspirations of Kenya's youth.
As we grapple with the implications of this trend, policymakers, leaders and stakeholders must heed the voices of Kenya's Gen Z and address the underlying factors driving their desire to leave. Investing in education, fostering innovation, and creating an enabling environment for entrepreneurship are crucial steps toward retaining and harnessing the talents of the country's youth.
Ultimately, the decision to leave one's homeland in search of a better future is deeply personal and reflective of the aspirations and dreams of each individual. While Kenya may continue to lose some of its brightest minds to brain drain, we must create a nation where every young person feels empowered to thrive and contribute meaningfully to society, whether at home or away. Only then can we truly stem the tide of migration and build a brighter future for generations.
